Mom and dad are advised contact their church during pregnancy to find out the step necessary to plan and prepare for the Christening, which in most cases takes place when the baby is weeks old. Whether the baby is a preemie, an infant or a toddler, the parents may contact the Parish of their choice to register the child, and themselves. Mom and dad may be asked to attend baptism classes either before or after the birth of the baby. A fun family event can involve the parents and other children in the family shopping for outfits for the newborn to wear while attending the classes. Many families are opting for the convenience of online shopping from a baby boutique for matching shirts, hats and jackets or coats and other clothing with coordinating jewelry. Shopping for a baby gift can be delightful! Both boys and girls traditionally wear christening gowns but not all churches will maintain that the children wear a gown. A white christening gown or outfit symbolizes purity and youth. If the preemie, infant or toddler is to be fully immersed in water, remember to bring a towel to dry the child. A special towel can be one of the presents given to the baby before the baptism. The Godparents traditionally have the honor of selecting the outfit for the child to wear on the day of the christening. Mom and dad help to tell the Godparents what their roles will and on the day of the baptism, the Godparents take care of the infant's needs. There are many appropriate christening gifts or baptism gifts to give to the baby for the ceremony that include a monetary gift in the child's name, a photograph album (perhaps monogrammed with the baby's name) and jewelry such as an identification bracelet of gold or silver, cross and heart necklaces and earrings.
